In 2021, QDIC, partnered with the East African Commission (EAC) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) to launch a groundbreaking East African tourism influencer campaign called TEMBEA NYUMBANI. This initiative aimed to revitalise the EAC tourism sector following a significant decline due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The tourism sector in the East African Community Partner States faced unprecedented challenges since March 2020, with international tourism plummeting due to the pandemic. Strict guidelines, including vaccination requirements and curfews, further hindered the recovery of the tourism industry.
To address these challenges and reduce dependence on international tourism, QDIC spearheaded a social media influencer campaign, TEMBEA NYUMBANI, spanning all six EAC Partner States. The campaign aimed to raise awareness among local citizens about the opportunities for domestic and regional tourism. QDIC collaborated with influencers from Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, and South Sudan to showcase the affordability and accessibility of domestic tourism to ordinary East Africans.
Through meticulous management and coordination, QDIC ensured the success of the TEMBEA NYUMBANI campaign. With an impressive reach of over 2 million viewers, the campaign effectively promoted the EAC and its Partner States as desirable destinations for tourists. By leveraging influencer content and joint promotions, the campaign contributed to a resurgence of regional tourism. Additionally, the adoption of preferential rates for EAC citizens at public tourist sites revitalised the tourism sector, restoring confidence in the East African region as a premier tourist destination.
